We had a fantastic day at Stockport's War Caves. Dressed as evacuees, we went into the sandstone tunnels and saw all kinds of World War 2 equipment.
We were shown round by a warden and a handyman, who were both very kind. They taught us to sing a few war time songs and showed us the First Aid Post and the 16 seater loo. Apparently, the caves were so posh that the local people called them The Chestergate Hotel.
In the afternoon, we were taken to the home of Mrs Hodkinson, from the WVS. We learned to make rag rugs and 'make do and mend', as well as how to deal with an incendiary bomb.
We had a brilliant day and Mrs Heaton has already booked for next year.
