The Aims of St Laurence’s School

The St Laurence curriculum is designed to be flexible, fluid, engaging and accessible to all. The curriculum will develop a wide range of skills covering core and foundation subjects, equipping children with skills for life and a future beyond this school. We will use diverse teaching strategies to develop the talents of each child and teachers will use the flexibilities that already exist to ensure high standards are met with opportunities for enrichment and creativity. The curriculum within a classroom should allow for a teacher’s strengths to shine, thus engaging children and encouraging an environment of learning, challenge and positivity.
Common Values and Purpose
The curriculum, whilst paying due regard to achieving high standards in English and Mathematics, is broad, exciting and challenging:
The curriculum is used to develop three main areas:
- Knowledge i.e. key concepts in mathematics
- Skills i.e. the ability to use the acquired knowledge
- Understanding as they grow and develop and become more aware of the world around them.
The curriculum will be carefully planned and structured to ensure that learning is continuous, and that the children make good progress with the development of their learning, We try to ensure that the knowledge and skills gained are used across the whole curriculum and not simply in isolation and that meaningful links are made between subjects in our half termly themes.
The curriculum will engage the children’s interest, encourage and motivate them to want to learn.
It will be exciting and offer children first-hand experience to reinforce their learning and to underpin their growing knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes;
It will open their eyes to the wonders of creation and cause them to marvel at the incredible and fantastic world in which we live.
Reading and Phonics
English is central to all learning, and indeed to life. Children need to develop the capacity to use the English language in all it's forms.
Our main school reading scheme is Oxford Reading Tree, supplemented with Project X and other books to provide range and balance.
We use Letters and Sounds to teach phonics.
